Musubi: Curating unique Japan experiences for sophisticated travellers

    Beyond the “Magic” on Television

    — On the Craft of Wasai and Essential Tourism —

This evening, the TV program “Sekai! Nihon Iki Taihito Ouen Dan” features the world of wasai, the traditional Japanese sewing craft.

The precision of hand craftsmanship — and the people who sustain it. Many viewers will likely see it not merely as a technique, but as a living culture.

That wasai workshop exists in Koga, Ibaraki Prefecture — my hometown.

A Meeting at the Koga East Rotary Club

I met Takako Sato, the principal of Takumi Junior College, at the Koga East Rotary Club. She is a leading figure in wasai who has received commendation from the Imperial Household, and serves as a judge for traditional dress and wasai at the WorldSkills Competition.

From our dialogue emerged a question: “How do we pass on the craft of wasai to people around the world?”

That question became the beginning of our work in Koga.

    What Became Visible in Koga

In Koga, centered on the wasai workshop, opportunities to encounter this culture gradually took shape through kimono-wearing experiences and workshop visits.

What became clear was the difference between familiarization visits designed for tourism and the responses of those who actually came to Koga.

    These included:
family travel from the United States,
    solo travel from Australia,
inbound training programs for high school students,
and partnership projects with the Koga Tourism Association on afternoon tea featuring peach blossoms.

What stayed with actual visitors was something quite different from the content of the experience itself — the feeling of being welcomed into the ongoing life of the community.

More than touching the technique of wasai, visitors felt natural gratitude toward the time and commitment of the people who have continued to maintain this craft and way of life.

From those in the community who welcomed the visitors, we also began to hear, quite naturally, words expressing a hope for their return — “Please come again.”

    The Concept of Essential Tourism

This is what I call “Essential Tourism”: tourism not as consumption, but as a mutual circulation of culture, judgment, and respect.

Visitors gain learning and gratitude by being welcomed into the community’s culture.

Local people gain pride and confirmation by welcoming those who seek to understand their culture.

The value that emerges from this mutual relationship cannot be measured by price alone. It quietly accumulates in the hearts of both community members and visitors — in the forms of trust, return visits, and recommendations.

This phenomenon arose from practice in one community, but I believe there is a structure common to many regions.

    On Accepting Cultural Heritage

Cultural acceptance that carries educational and professional dimensions — such as wasai — differs fundamentally from ordinary tourism.

Rather than being judged solely by numbers or scheduling, such acceptance requires thoughtful consideration of the environment and the burden on teachers and practitioners, and must be approached in ways that create no strain.

Culture ceases to continue the moment the people who sustain it become exhausted.

    Sample Itinerary

The following PDF illustrates how cultural context, time, and intention are integrated into a family visit itinerary. With images and detailed timing, it shows what an actual visit to wasai in Koga looked like for an American family.

It demonstrates how we structure time for understanding, not consumption.

    In Closing

A culture sustained by human hands and time — like wasai — can be passed forward to the next generation or consumed and discarded, depending entirely on how we receive it.

I am neither a researcher nor a critic. As a nationally certified interpreter guide and a regional DMC operator, I have stood in the field, facing people directly, making judgments, and coordinating solutions. Precisely because of this position, I speak these words with lived experience.

Treasuring this place and these people, connecting quietly and sincerely with the world.

I hope this way of relating will continue.

This question was born in Koga, one community, but I believe it resonates quietly in many other places as well.

  • A Journey Across Japan Covered by National Media —from The Samurai Challenge to Japan Classic (2025): Seven Years of Practice in High-Value Adventure Travel

A Journey Across Japan Covered by National Media
—from The Samurai Challenge to Japan Classic (2025): Seven Years of Practice in High-Value Adventure Travel

This initiative was originally featured in a series of regional newspapers across Japan following an interview conducted by Kyodo News, one of Japan’s leading news agencies.
At the time, the coverage focused on the Bentley Drivers Club Rising Sun Rally, an international touring project that brought classic Bentley automobiles from overseas to Japan for a long-distance journey across the country.

Rather than publishing these articles immediately, this summary is presented now—at a moment when the full trajectory of the initiative can be clearly understood.

What began as an experimental journey has, over seven years, evolved into a replicable Japanese model of high-value adventure travel, culminating in Japan Classic (2025).

National Media Attention and Social Context

The Kyodo News coverage was syndicated to multiple regional newspapers, each presenting similar content that emphasized:

    • A 20+ day journey traversing 24 prefectures across Japan

    • Routes designed to follow coastlines, mountains, forests, and agricultural landscapes

    • Encounters with everyday local life—cherry blossoms, farming activities, festivals, and community events

    • Cultural visits to museums and heritage sites

    • A target audience of intellectually curious, high-spending travelers seeking meaning rather than luxury facilities

The nationwide publication of these articles reflects not merely interest in a single event, but broader recognition of Adventure Travel (AT) as a strategic direction for Japan’s tourism future.

    “No Special Attractions Are Required”

A recurring message in the coverage was a simple yet profound realization:

Extraordinary tourism resources are not required.
What travelers seek is authentic, unembellished regional life.

This insight did not emerge as a marketing concept, but through direct experience dating back to The Samurai Challenge (2017)—a pioneering classic car journey from Kyushu to Hokkaido involving participants from 13 countries.

The landscapes seen through a car window, conversations with local residents, and ordinary seasonal scenes left a deeper impression than any staged attraction.

Government Recognition During the Pandemic (2021)

In 2021, amid the global standstill of international tourism caused by COVID-19, this initiative took a critical step forward.

A condensed version of the concept was selected as one of only 12 projects nationwide under the Japan Tourism Agency’s Adventure Travel-related pilot programs, designed to prepare for post-pandemic recovery and high-value inbound tourism.

Even under severe restrictions, the pilot demonstrated that:

    • Regional culture and nature could generate high value without overdevelopment

    • Coordination between local communities, guides, and destination management structures was essential

    • High-value tourism could be both low-impact and long-stay

While travel paused, the structure continued to mature.

International Validation and the Birth of Japan Classic (2025)

In 2024, these accumulated insights were applied in practice through the Bentley Drivers Club Rising Sun Rally, an internationally recognized touring project.
While the Bentley Drivers Club served as the outward-facing entity, the Japanese-side planning, regional coordination, and operational design were implemented domestically.

Building on this experience, Japan Classic (2025) was launched as a Japan-originated initiative—designed not as a car event, but as a framework for connecting regional culture, everyday landscapes, and global travelers in a sustainable, high-value way.

Adventure Travel as a Regenerative Cycle

As emphasized by leaders within Japan’s Adventure Travel sector:

Each town and village should have its own form of adventure travel, rooted in its natural and cultural identity.

By attracting travelers who resonate with regional values and reinvesting tourism revenue locally, adventure travel can create a positive cycle—supporting cultural continuity, environmental stewardship, and community pride.

    Why This Record Matters Now

The original media coverage centered on an international touring club.
What is now visible, however, is the underlying structure that enabled the journey:
local coordination, guide judgment, and long-term destination design.

    From The Samurai Challenge (2017)
    to government-backed pilot testing (2021)
    to international validation (2024)
    and finally Japan Classic (2025)

this seven-year trajectory demonstrates that high-value tourism does not depend on spectacle or luxury infrastructure.

Instead, it emerges from everyday regional life—when thoughtfully connected, respectfully curated, and responsibly managed.

    国際的評価を経て、Japan Classic(2025)へ

Bentley Drivers Club Rising Sun Rally

    Japan Classic

    Bentley Drivers Club

    ✨ Why This Schedule Matters

The itinerary is intentionally short, focused, and quiet—respecting the rhythm of the brewery and the trust extended by the brewmaster.

    👤 Recommended For

    • Guests who want to understand sake beyond tasting

    • Those who find standard brewery tours insufficient

    • Travelers interested in fermentation, craftsmanship, and living food culture

    • Visitors seeking experiences made possible only through trust and long-term relationships

    🚫 Important Requests for Participation

    Sake brewing is extremely sensitive.
To protect the brewing environment, we kindly but firmly ask all participants to observe the following:

    • On the morning of the visit, please avoid fermented foods such as citrus fruits, yogurt, natto, or similar products

    • Please do not wear perfume, cologne, or any scented products

External yeasts and aromas may negatively affect sake production.
These conditions are essential and non-negotiable.
